Much like the seasons, our skin types can change depending on the time of year. The summer months might mean you have oily skin but in the winter your skin may dry out. It can be difficult to know what to do when this happens and what products to use. This is where beauty balm can help!
There are a number of factors to consider on finding out why your skin type may change. I know for me personally, having the central heating on constantly leaves my skin feeling tight and dry. This is where I love introducing oil based products into my routine. By having skincare products such as a cleansing balm or a heavy duty moisturiser means that the nourishing oils really penetrate the skin's barrier and protects it from everyday pollutants.
Why do I have dry skin and acne?
Did you know dry skin can actually lead to more breakouts? It's easy to believe that the more oily your skin is, the more breakouts you have. However if you don't properly look after dry skin in winter the glands in your skin will overcompensate by producing more sebum than needed (a natural oil that your skin's glands produce). The excess oil and dead skin will then build up and clog pores, meaning more breakouts...
This is where I recommend a gentle exfoliator! A product that has very fine grains (emphasis on very and fine!!) will help regulate the skin's process by eliminating any build up. Follow this with a rejuvenating serum and your skin will be healthy and glowing all winter long!
The forces of nature...
The obvious perpetrator for dull and tired skin during the colder months is the weather. To go from sun-kissed to sunless in a matter of weeks is a transition we aren't fans of! The icy chill and low humidity levels conspire to leave skin feeling dehydrated and tight but this can all be solved with some expert tips and SLC (Skin Loving Care).
Living in Scotland has opened my eyes to the effects cold weather can have on the skin, I practically bath in our cleansing balm every night to try relieve the harsh effects of the Scottish winds! As much as this time of year can bring joy and festive spirit, the shorter days and colder nights can leave us not so jolly...
beauty balm's Winter Skin Essentials:
- Regularly clean cold weather accessories; hats, scarves and gloves all play a key role in keeping our skin warm and protected. However they can also encourage sweat build up, thus leading to breakouts.
- Choose kinder ingredients; products that may help your skin in summer might be too harsh for the winter months and further strip your skin of any moisture. Switch to more organic and natural products to alleviate dry skin.
- Stay hydrated; It is so easy to forget to drink water when the sun isn't beaming down on you all day. All you want is a nice cuppa or hot chocolate, but water encourages collagen production and flushes toxins (including acne-causing ones) from our bodies. If you’re not drinking the recommended 2 litres of water (or 6-8 glasses) every day, your skin will appear dull. You’re also likely to increase the look of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Tweak that routine! Swap to a thicker moisturiser or add a night serum into the mix to suit your skin type. I tend to use an exfoliating face mask in the winter to get the best of both worlds; extra nutrients absorbing into the skin whilst getting rid of build up, perfect!
Finally, if you take anything from today's blog... look after those chapped lips!! One of the most vulnerable parts of our face is the lips and they can become sore so quickly in the winter! Our Cocoa + Clementine Lip Balm will be your best friend this winter, you'll never look back!
